Fluticasone nasal spray which helps relieve the symptoms of a stuffy, itchy or runny nose (rhinitis)

Brand Names Flixonase, pirinase, avamys
Used For the symptoms of a stuffy, itchy or runny nose (rhinitis)
Doseage usual dose is two sprays into each nostril once or twice a day . This can be reduced to one spray when symptoms are controlled
Side Effects Headache, dry throat , nasal irritation
Warnings Avoid after nasal surgery (until healing has occurred) Avoid in pulmonary tuberculosis Avoid in the presence of untreated nasal infections
Pregnancy Discuss with doctor before using, but intranasal and inhaled steroids are not known to be harmful in pregnancy

What is Fluticasone used to treat?

Fluticasone nasal spray is used to treat allergic rhinitis or hayfever. 

It is helpful for the symptoms associated with this condition , i.e sneezing, runny nose and itchy nose

How does Fluticasone work?

Contains a steroid medication which is used to calm down the inflammation and swelling that causes congestion, itching, sneezing and irritation in the nose

How do I take Fluticasone?

This medication is usually prescribed to be used twice a day into each nostril

Before using this medication blow your nose gently to clear it

use the spray (you should see a fine mist in the air) by inserting the nozzle into your nostril while closing the other nostril with your finger and breathe into each nostril.

Clean the nozzle after use

It takes a few days of treatment to feel the full effect, if you have hayfever it is best to start the treatment 2-3 weeks before the hayfever season begins

Side effects of Fluticasone

Common side effects of Fluticasone include dryness and irritation of the nose and throat, mild nosebleeds, unusual taste and smells ( because it is a nasal preparation) and headaches

Things to avoid

Avoid sharing this medication with others who may have similar symptoms

Do not use this medication if you have an active and untreated infection in your nose

It is best to avoid after nasal surgery

It is best to avoid alcohol whilst on this medication

Can I take Fluticasone when pregnant?

Being pregnant can increase the likelihood of getting symptoms like nasal stuffiness and discomfort; Fluticasone can be used with caution but it is best to discuss this with one of our doctors

Fluticasone and breastfeeding

Small amounts of Fluticasone will be found in the breast milk so it is important to use with caution and speak to a doctor first
